Address from the President

Rooted in the vibrant innovation hub of Zhangjiang, Shanghai, and building on the strong partnership between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), CAS has remained steadfast in fulfilling its mission as a key force of the nation's strategic scientific and technological capabilities. Since its founding in 2008, SARI has been committed to serving national strategic needs and driving regional innovation development, focusing on major scientific frontiers, promoting interdisciplinary integration, and fostering a collaborative ecosystem that brings together technological and industrial innovation.

Looking back, our original commitment remains as strong as ever. Through more than a decade of persistent effort, we have always embraced an open and inclusive mindset. The transfer of the National Facility for Protein Science in Shanghai (NFPSS) in 2017 and the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) in 2018 injected strong momentum into SARI's innovation and development. Focusing on the development, construction, and operation of advanced light source facilities, we conduct original research and develop key core technologies in accelerator science, photon science, energy technology and information technology. Our work supports cutting-edge scientific research and provides solutions in core and integrated technologies for strategic emerging industries.

Building on past efforts, SARI remains fully committed to leading the development of the Zhangjiang Photon Large-Scale Facility Cluster, enabling these major national research infrastructures to serve as innovation hubs that support fundamental research and tackle key technical challenges. SSRF, which covers the broadest energy range and serves the most users, continues to deliver innovation momentum. The Protein Data Bank China (PDBc), the fourth of its kind globally and the only one in China, supports breakthroughs in life sciences. The country's first X-ray free-electron laser facility has achieved a leap in coherent performance across an ultra-wide bandwidth, with key technologies and core capabilities for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers now ranking among the world's top tier. SARI also provides important technical support for building a clean, low-carbon energy system and a secure, efficient network system, while strengthening the international voice of Chinese industries. We have successfully established a full low-carbon technology chain and a carbon accounting system for converting CO₂ into high-value chemicals, independently developed small turbine power equipment for use in various scenarios, and led the development of multiple international standards for 6G communications.

Standing at a new starting point, SARI will stay focused on the national goal of becoming a science and technology powerhouse by 2035. We are dedicated to enhancing our core competitiveness, innovation drive, talent cohesion, and platform support capabilities. By uniting our wisdom through a shared vision and pooling our efforts to reach new heights, we will strive to build a world-class cluster of large-scale research facilities and a multidisciplinary research center, contributing the strength of SARI to achieving high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and to building a global leader in science and technology.
