Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "SARI") is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive research institution co-established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Located in Shanghai's Zhangjiang area, it was founded on September 26, 2008.
SARI operates three major national scientific facilities, all officially open to users and recognized for their world-leading overall performance: the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), the National Facility for Protein Science in Shanghai (NFPSS), and the Shanghai Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (SXFEL).
Centered on the development, construction, and operation of advanced light source facilities, SARI conducts fundamental research and develops key technologies in accelerator science, photon science, energy technology and information technology. Its work supports frontier scientific research and provides core and integrated technology solutions for strategic emerging industries.
SARI currently has over 1,000 staff members, nearly 800 graduate students, and more than 300 individuals recognized by national, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shanghai municipal talent programs. Aligned with the goals of building Shanghai into a globally influential science and technology innovation center and Zhangjiang into a comprehensive national science center, SARI actively pursues reform, innovation, and development.
