SARI Grandly Settles in Pudong Science and Technology Park

On December 26th, the Settle-in Ceremony of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was held in Pudong Science and Technology Park, which signifies that major progress has been made to the construction of Pudong Science and Technology Park jointly established by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Municipal Government. Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Committee and Mayor of Shanghai HAN Zheng, Vice President of CAS JIANG Mianheng, SHI Erwei and LI Jiayang, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Committee YIN Yicui, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Committee and First Deputy Mayor of Shanghai YANG Xiong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Committee and party secretary of the Pudong New District XU Lin, Deputy Mayor of Shanghai SHEN Xiaoming, Assistant Mayor of Shanghai ZHANG Xuebing, et al. attended the ceremony.

Other leaders and members from Academy-Municipality Cooperation Committee, related parties from Shanghai Municipal Government, Pudong New District, Zhangjiang Group and respective departments of CAS system and leaders and guests from Shanghai also participated in the ceremony. HUA Renchang, Chief Commander of Pudong Science and Technology Park construction and engineering, hosted the ceremony.

President of the preparatory committee of SARI FENG Songlin, Deputy Director of Shanghai Construction and Transportation Committee JIANG Shujie, Secretary of CPC CAS Shanghai Branch Committee and Vice President WANG Jianyu, Deputy Secretary General of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and District Governor JIANG Liang et al. delivered speeches during the ceremony.

YANG Xiong pointed out in his address that SARI’s moving into Pudong Science and Technology Park marks a new step forward for the cooperation between Shanghai Municipal Government and CAS. Shanghai has always been in an advantageous position regarding the good cooperation with CAS. To support CAS’s development in Shanghai is not only a requirement for Shanghai and the country’s development, but also an important measure for the transformation of Shanghai’s economic development mode, economic structure adjustment, and strategic emerging industries cultivation. Shanghai will leverage the cooperation with CAS to better serve the country’s strategy and improve Shanghai’s independent innovation capability. He believes that there is a bright future for SARI and Pudong Science and Technology Park.

In his address, JIANG Mianheng mentioned that, standing at the country level, based on friendly cooperation and collaboratively planning the country’s requirement and regional development, it is an important measure for CAS and Shanghai Municipal Government to build Shanghai Pudong Science and Technology Park and to establish Shanghai Advanced Research Institute. CAS will continue to advance the construction of Pudong Science and Technology Park, focusing on the innovation value chain to build a new technology achievement transfer platform that integrates projects, market, talent and capital, serving Shanghai’s innovation driven development strategy, thus leading the formation and development of emerging industries in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta. Under the strong leadership of CAS and Shanghai Municipal Government, Pudong Science and Technology Park will surely make great strategic contribution to Shanghai’s regional economic and social development as well as innovation system construction.

Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences is an applied research and educational institute, which caters for the needs of sustainable economic and social development in Shanghai while relying on the interdisciplinary studies in order to enhance our domestic innovation capability. SARI will focus on the R&D of core science and technology adhering to national strategic objectives, actively promote science and technology transfer and transformation and advanced inter-disciplinary studies, cultivate talents with innovative and entrepreneurial capability, and explore reform and renovation of current system and mechanism. Leveraging the scientific resources of CAS and Shanghai’s comprehensive strength, SARI aims to collaboratively advance the development of national innovation system and achieve critical breakthroughs, thus making scientific contribution to the enhancement of Shanghai’s independent innovative capability and international competitiveness.

According to FENG Songlin, SARI has established a high-level science and research team led by more than fifty senior talents from both domestic and overseas, developed different forms of effective cooperation with corporations, and established about twenty R&D centers and Joint Labs. SARI has initiated a series of major directions and projects, and has established a science and research strategy layout characterized by five research areas, namely, Frontier Studies and Advanced Materials, Space and Marin Science and Technology, Information Science and Technology, Energy and Environment and Life Sciences. FENG Songlin noted that the SARI staff will keep up the hard work to solve tough problems and overcome difficulties, strive for innovation to achieve the goal of relying on Shanghai, serving the country and embracing the world, and becoming a comprehensive industrial technology research institute.

During the ceremony, SARI also signed contracts with twelve famous corporations from home and abroad and jointly unveiled the plaques, including China Mobile Group (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., China Academy of Transportation Sciences, Boeing (China) Co. Ltd., Sony (China) Co. Ltd, Lu’An Group, Elion Group, China Three Gorges Corporation, Shanghai Electric, Technology Research Institute of Shanghai Huayi (Group) Company, China Shipbuilding Industry Society Boat Branch, etc.
