The 2nd Asia-Oceania International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation Successfully Held in Hangzhou
date: 2025-11-25

The 2nd Asia-Oceania International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (AO-SRI2025), organized by the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences was successfully held in Hangzhou from October 28th to 31st, 2025.

This event attracted 213 attendees from 11 countries. The scientific program was comprehensive, featuring 5 plenary lectures, 17 keynote lectures, 20 invited lectures, 25 oral lecturesand 23 poster presentations. Main topics included the upgrade and construction of synchrotron facilities, advances in X-ray optics and experimental methodology, big data processing and industrial applications, etc.

Professor RenzhongTai, deputy president of SARI and deputy director of SSRF, chaired the conference and delivered the opening address. In his speech, he underscored the vigorous development of advanced synchrotron facilitiesacross Asia-Oceania region and called for further strengthening cross-regional collaboration.

The conference provided a great plateau for leaders of the region's major synchrotron facilities. Representatives from Japan's SPring-8, Korea's 4GLS, and China's SSRF, HEPS, HALF etc., shared updates on facility construction, upgrades and strategic development.

A series of renowned scientists highlighted groundbreaking applications of synchrotron radiation. Presentations from Professor Ho-kwang Mao, Professor Shin-ichi Adachi and Professor Fu Gao covered high-pressure science, molecular self-assembly, and structural biology. Other leading scholars presented cutting-edge research in areas such as thermoelectrics, brain imaging and industrial applications.

In a significant step for regional governance, the Asia-Oceania Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR) council committee appointed Professor Renzhong Tai as new president and Professor Masaki Yamamoto from Japan as vice president. It was also announced that the next AO-SRI conference will be held in 2028 and hosted by Korea Basic Science Institute.

The closing ceremony featured an address by Professor Richard Garrett, who presented the Hangzhou Communique. The communique expresses strong recognization for the progress of synchrotron radiation instrumentation across the Asia-Oceania region and strong confidence for the future of regional collaboration.

The 2025 AO-SRI conference was financially supported by the Asia-Oceania Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
