President of Royal Society Visited SARI

On September 15, 2013, Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society, Britain's national academy of sciences, and Tony Cheetham, Vice President of the Royal Society, paid a visit to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Huang Weiguang, Vice President of SARI, received the Royal Society delegation, with relevant researchers from the Health Science Division of SARI attending the meeting.
Prof. Huang Weiguang welcomed Sir Paul Nurse and the Royal Society delegation to SARI, introduced SARI’s science and research activities and strategic development plan, pointed out that SARI focuses on interdisciplinary research and integrative innovation, dedicated to explore the development model that combines research, industry, education and application through domestic and international cooperation. Sir Paul Nurse thanked SARI for the reception, and expressed that the Royal Society delegation aims to improve collaboration and cooperation between China and United Kingdom through this visit to China. Sir Paul Nurse mentioned that science plays an important role in culture and civilization, and he hoped that both sides could explore cooperation mechanism, jointly improving the state of human kind and protecting the environment. Both sides also discussed on the ways to promote interdisciplinary research, encourage the interaction between science and industry, and also exchanged ideas of cooperation in joint projects and personnel exchange.
After the meeting, the Royal Society delegation visited the Center for Stem Cell and Nano-medicine of SARI and Shanghai Institute of Advanced Immunochemical Studies, and discussed with the researchers on related research topics.

EPFL Delegation from Switzerland Visited SARI

September 4th, 2013—At the invitation of Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch, éCOLE POLYTECHNIQUE FéDéRALE DE LAUSANNE (EPFL) visited Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS), received by Deputy Dean of General Office of CAS Shanghai Branch Mr. Yang Zhenghua and representatives of SARI’s International Cooperation Department.
First of all, Mr. Yang gave a vivid introduction of CAS Shanghai Branch, the CAS institutes under CAS Shanghai Branch and their respective research areas and advantages. Mr. Liu Jianzhou, Deputy Director of SARI’ s International Cooperation Department introduced SARI’s research platform, development strategy and international cooperation footprints. Then, the delegation visited SARI’s Research Achievements Showroom and the demonstration of City Intelligent Energy Network (CIEN). The students were very interested in the displays and there was a heated discussion among the delegation and related researchers.  
Dr. Florence Graezer Bideau, Director of Centre for Area and Cultural Studies CACS, thanked CAS Shanghai Branch and SARI for the warm reception. Through this visit, she said, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of China’s S&T development and was impressed by CAS Shanghai Branch and SARI’s development.

VP of Shell Visit SARI

    August. 22nd, 2013----Mr. John MacArthur, Vice President of Gas Technology for Shell and Mr. Jing Xudong, Manager for External Innovation R&D (Asia) visited Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI). Vice President of SARI Sun Yuhan received the Shell delegation and held technical exchanges with them, along with principal investigators of Low Carbon Conversion Center.
 
    Prof. Sun Yuhan expressed warm welcome to the delegation and showed Mr. John MacArthur around SARI’s Technological Achievements Showroom as well as labs of Low Carbon Center. He also introduced SARI’s research outline and some related research activities, especially the focus and development plan in the field of energy and environment.

    During the technical exchanges, Prof. Sun Yuhan introduced the current development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in China and the work SARI has done in this area. Prof. Zhao Tiejun, researcher of Low Carbon Center, gave a brief introduction of the Center’s research area and progress regarding natural gas reforming. Mr. John MacArthur thought highly of SARI’s achievements in the field of low carbon energy conversion and exchanged ideas with related researchers concerning natural gas reforming and CCUS. He also hoped to conduct more substantial cooperation with SARI based on the existing successful cooperation.

Boeing Delegation visited SARI

August 8th, 2013—Vice President of Boeing research & technology Mr. Don Winter, Vice President of Boeing research & technology China Dr. Dongyang Wu and Vice President of Digital Aviation Technology of Boeing Commercial Airplanes Mr. Alan Johnson visited Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. President of SARI Dr. Feng Songlin received the Boeing delegation, accompanied by Dr. Xu Haoyu, Director of the Joint Lab for Aviation Connectivity Technology and other related researchers.


On behalf of SARI, President Feng Songlin expressed warm welcome to Boeing delegation and introduced SARI’s strategic development plan, as well as some related ongoing projects. Xu Haoyu thanked Boeing for its long-term support, then showcased the Joint Lab’s projects and achievements.
After that, Alan Johnson made a presentation on Digital Aviation, which well illustrated Boeing’s planning and efforts in the field of digital aviation. Dongyang Wu thought highly of the achievements of the joint lab and hoped that the two parties would go further in the related areas. Agreements on future collaboration had been reached after some in-depth discussion in the end.
After the meeting, the delegation visited the joint lab and watched the demonstration of some on-going projects, and discussed with the researchers on some technical topics.

GNN Shanghai for Drexel Alumni Successfully Held

On April 18 the Global Night of Networking Shanghai for Drexel alumni was successfully held in Drexel-SARI Center.
Dr. Wei Sun who is the professor of Drexel University and the director of Drexel-SARI Center introduced SARI, Drexel and ongoing projects in Drexel-SARI Center to the 17 attending alumni from Honeywell, Dupont, Deloitte and other world famous companies. They shared the current work and life situation, appreciated the help and support from SARI for this event and expected more communication and collaboration activities in the future.

SARI and Shell Frontier Science Project Signing Ceremony Successfully Held


  On March 28th 2013, a delegation from Royal Dutch Shell, led by Executive Committee Member and Director of Projects and Technology Dr. Matthias Bichsel, Executive Chairman of Shell Companies in China Mr. Huibert Vigeveno, and Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President Innovation and R&D Mr. Gerald Schotman paid a visit to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and attended the SARI-Shell second-batch Frontier Projects signing ceremony. CAS Shanghai Branch President Jiang Mianheng, Executive Vice President Zhu Zhiyuan, Vice Presidents of SARI Sun Yuhan and Jiang Biao attended the event. 
  The Shell delegation visited SARI's Low Carbon Conversion Science and Engineering Center, Dr. Sun Yuhan gave an overview of SARI and introduced the Center's research areas and development plan.
  Dr. Bichsel and the Shell team also reviewed the Frontier Science Projects Posters, accompanied by Dr. Jiang Biao, with project leaders introducing each joint frontier research project. Dr. Bruce Levell, Shell's Vice President of Emerging Technologies and Chief Scientist made a keynote presentation titled “Future Energy and Emerging Technologies”, in which he introduced China's energy system, global energy network and Shell's future energy technology projects, and also introduced the Frontier Science projects between Shell and CAS.
  On behalf of both sides, Dr. Sun Yuhan and Mr. Schotman signed the second-batch frontier projects, and the two parties discussed on strengthening future cooperation.
  In his remarks, Dr. Bishsel pointed out that as an international energy company, Shell needs technology and innovation, and the most effective way for technology advancement is through joint research. Shell attaches great importance to the cooperation with China in energy sector, and hope that both sides could achieve more fruitful results through long term cooperation.
  Dr. Jiang Mianheng thanked Shell for collaborating with SARI, pointed out that China requires sustainable development and energy security, improving energy efficiency and developing clean energy technology. The Frontier Science projects are dedicated to frontier science research, it is hoped that both sides could provide solutions for future energy and environment problems through cooperation, pushing forward the advancement of technology and energy security by combining research, education and industry, making due contribution to realizing China Dream and the World Dream.
