Grand Opening Ceremony of SIAIS

On October 12th, 2012, the inauguration of the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies (SIAIS) of ShanghaiTech University was held in CAS Shanghai Pudong Science & Technology Park. The President of CAS Shanghai Branch, Dr. JIANG Mianheng, Shanghai Pudong New Area Party Secretary, Mr. XU Lin, Deputy Mayor of Shanghai, Dr. SHEN Xiaoming, and CAS academicians, Dr. RAO Zihe, Dr. SHEN Wenqing, and Dr. CHEN Xiaoya, et al. attended the ceremony. 
President JIANG presented Dr. Richard A. Lerner the Appointment Letter of Founding Director of SIAIS. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Lerner expressed his vision of making SIAIS a most prestigious world-class institute in immunochemistry and antibody research, and his plan of recruiting and training leading scientists from China and overseas. 

In president JIANG’s congratulation speech, he pointed out that China is currently experiencing a pivotal period of deepening the reform and opening-up and accelerating the transformation of the economic development path. He emphasized that science and technology are playing an increasingly important role in meeting various challenges of new energy development, environment protection, people's healthcare, and employment. President JIANG said that the current developing strategy of driven-via-innovation and grown-through-transformation sets a much higher standard for the researchers and scientists. The establishment of SIAIS is one of the critical steps by ShanghaiTech University to meet the demands of promoting science and technology and enhancing people's health in China. He believes that SIAIS could live up to the expectations and make important and significant contributions to the health of mankind.

The Deputy Mayor of Shanghai, Dr. SHEN Xiaoming, addressed in his speech that biological medicine is of essential importance to national well-being and the people's livelihood. Immunochemistry is the foundation of therapeutic antibody research, and an important scientific discipline in the discovery and development of new medicines. The establishment of SIAIS meets the need of the economic restructuring and innovation-driven development of Shanghai; it is an important step for ShanghaiTech University to achieve its initiatives of research and education integration, operative structure reform and innovation, and top level international scientific collaboration; it marks a significant milestone for ShanghaiTech University during its preparation.

Dr. FENG Songlin, President of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS), addressed that SARI will continue the momentum in the preparation process, take advantage of the effective mode in cross-disciplinary scientific research and technology transfer, and work closely with ShanghaiTech University to make SIAIS a great success.
SIAIS, jointly founded by ShanghaiTech University and SARI-CAS, is dedicated to improving human health through scientific / academic excellence, multi-disciplinary crossing, and innovative drug discovery. The institute will focus on cutting-edge platform technologies, novel therapeutic targets, and scientific breakthroughs.

The vice president of SARI-CAS Dr. JIANG Biao introduced that the mission of SIAIS is to build a strong multi-functional and cross-disciplinary foundation to marry basic research with clinical studies; and medical applications with biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. SIAIS provides a stage for the top talents of innovation as well as a cradle for the future young talents of China. SIAIS will lead in the discovery and commercialization of novel antibody applications.
SIAIS is establishing a Young Scholar Foundation to select outstanding young scientists and students each year to attend famous universities or institutes in the U.S. and Europe. 

SIAIS-ShanghaiTech follows the Director Responsibility System with the governing body of The Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Committee. The Founding Director, Dr. Richard A. Lerner, is the former President of The Scripps Research Institute and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Medical Sciences, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Lerner's career in science is one of the most distinguished and decorated. His achievements and contributions are recognized worldwide. As a pioneer and one of the founding fathers in immunochemistry theory, he has developed almost every important research method and tool such as combinatorial antibody library approach, catalytic antibody approach, the intra-cellular combinatorial antibody library approach, etc. Dr. Lerner, together with Sir Gregory P. Winter, owns the patent for the world's largest drug on the market, the monoclonal antibody Humira. Dr. Lerner has already invited several famous US/Canada/UK scientists to join SIAIS.

Oregon Governor Visited SARI

October 17 2012, a delegation led by John Kitzhaber, Governor of Oregon, paid a visit to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS). Dr. SUN Yuhan, Vice President of SARI, accompanied the delegation to a lab tour in energy and environment division.
        
In the Green City Intelligent Energy Network Demonstration area, the researchers introduced the integration of new energy technology, storage and charging and electric vehicle, and the comprehensive solution of “energy saving and emission reduction, complementary energy resources” that innovates the future city development. First Lady Cylvia Hyes, as an environmentalist, showed her interest in electric car by driving in the Park herself. The Governor was impressed by the city household waste treatment project and the digital medical systems.

At the Low Caron Energy Conversion Technology Centre, Dr. SUN Yuhan introduced the hybrid energy system that combines coal, syngas and nuclear, and the low carbon utilization of high carbon energy resources.

Dr. JIANG Mianheng, President of CAS Shanghai Branch and Dr. FENG Songlin, President of SARI-CAS, had a meeting with Governor Kitzhaber and some delegation members, and explored the technology communication and cooperation in areas of green energy and eco-city development.

ACGT2012 Successfully Held

Asian Congress on Gas Turbines 2012 (ACGT2012), jointly hosted by Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Gas Turbine Society of Japan and Korean Fluid Machinery Association, and locally organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Electric and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, was successfully held in Shanghai from August 20th to 22nd 2012. Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor WENG Shilie from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, served as the Chair of ACGT2012 Organizing Committee. Professor JIANG Mianheng, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch, Director LI Ye from Energy Saving & Science equipment Department of National Energy Administration, Vice Director SHANG Yuying from Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information, Director LIU Tao from Engineering and Materials Science Department of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and around 200 experts, engineers, user representatives and students from Asia, Europe and US joined the event.

Professor WENG delivered an opening address on behalf of the Organizing Committee, pointed out that ACGT is an international congress on gas turbines started in 2005 and the ACGT2012 follows the tradition set at the first and second ACGT conferences held in Korea 2005 and in Japan 2009, aiming to provide an international platform for extensive exchange of information among gas turbine researchers, users and manufacturers within and outside Asian region. Professor WENG welcomed the attending guests and students, and hoped that the participants could jointly push forward the research and development of gas turbine through discussion.

Professor JIANG Mianheng mentioned the severe challenges the world is facing in energy and environment area in his address, and stressed the important role of the efficient heat power conversion system, with gas turbine technology as its core, in the sustainable energy development and environment protection. Professor JIANG believed that the congress would serve as a high-level platform for state-of-the-art gas turbine technology, advancing the gas turbine research and cooperation in Asia and the world.
In her address, Director SHANG Yuying introduced Shanghai as an important base for high end energy equipment and advanced manufacturing industry with solid foundation in the production, application and support of gas turbine, and wished that the attending experts could pay more attention and provide more support to the development of Shanghai’s gas turbine industry.

Dr. Norihiko Iki made a keynote lecture titled The reliabity of Gas Turbine Installations in the Great East Japan Earthquake, Director LI Ye made a Keynote Speech regarding the development and prospect of gas turbine industry in China, Dr. Aoki Sunao presented on the past, present and future of gas turbines, and Professor Kim Kwang-Yong made a keynote presentation on the optimization of a novel film-cooling hole for turbine blade cooling.

ACGT2012 consists of keynote speeches, high-level forum, group sessions and plant visit. During the three-day meetings, the attendees conducted extensive communication and discussion on key technologies, current status and future development trend of gas turbine, and explored the collaboration opportunities in gas turbine technology area.

Saudi Aramco Delegation Visited SARI

May 29, 2012, a delegation from Saudi Aramco, led by Manager of Research & Development Center Faisal Al-Faqeer, paid a visit to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS). Dr. JIANG Biao, Vice President of SARI-CAS, received the delegation. Researchers from Energy and Environment Division of SARI-CAS joined the meeting.
Dr. JIANG Biao extended a warm welcome to Saudi Aramco delegation, and introduced SARI’s research layout and future development plan. He mentioned that SARI is dedicated to interdisciplinary research, innovation and application, building an integrative platform that combines research, education and industry. It is hoped that both sides could advance the cooperation through discussion. Faisal Faqeer presented on the basic situation of Saudi Aramco Research and Development Center, hoping that collaboration projects and cooperation patterns can be established through the follow-up discussion and communication by technical teams.
After the meeting, Saudi Aramco delegation visited the Low Carbon Conversion Technology Research Lab, and discussed with the researchers on topics of mutual interests.

EPSRC Engineering Doctoral Summer School 2012 China Successfully Held

  From July 2nd to 4th 2012, the EPSRC Engineering Doctoral Summer School 2012 China, sponsored by EPSRC EngD Centre on Efficient Power from Fossil Energy and Carbon Capture Technologies, the University of Nottingham, and co-organized by Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Institute of Coal Chemistry (ICC) of Chinese Academy of Sciences was successfully held in Shanghai. Prof. FENG Songlin, President of SARI and Prof. SUN Yuhan, Vice President of SARI, Prof. Colin E. Snape, Director of Engineering Doctor Centre for Efficient Power from Fossil Fuels and Carbon Capture Technologies and Director of Energy Technology Research Institute of University of Nottingham, and Prof. WEI Wei, Director Assistant of ICC, attended the event. More than 30 PhD students from UK universities including University of Birmingham, University College London and University of Nottingham, and 30 PhD students from Chinese universities and institutes such as Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Southeast University, SARI, ICC, Qingdao Institute of Bio-energy & Bioprocess Technology, Institute of Rock & Soil Mechanics (IRSM) and Institute of Process Engineering, etc participated in the summer school.
  Prof. FENG kicked off the event with a welcome speech, in which he welcomed the students and faculty to SARI for the summer school event, and hoped that the students could have deep communication and discussion, contributing to the advancement of the development of clean fossil energy and low carbon technologies.

  Prof. SUN delivered a keynote speech titled “SARI’s solutions to Energy Challenge”, analyzed the energy challenges the world is facing and China’s energy distribution status, and introduced SARI’s research and demonstration projects around clean energy and low carbon technologies.

  In his keynote speech, Prof. Colin Snape introduced the recent UK and European developments in coal and gas, and explored the future of clean fossil energy. Shell’s Senior Principal Scientist Alexander van der Made shared his views from the global perspective regarding energy transition, analyzing the energy resource distribution and utilization in the west and east, and proposed the energy area cooperation direction between the east and west. Prof. Kaoru Fujimoto from the University of Kitakyushu also presented on the selective synthesis of LPG from synthesis gas, and briefed on its theory and history.
  The attending students showed great interest in the keynote speeches and discussed with the experts on several technical issues, and also made oral presentations regarding their own paper posters. During the group discussion session, each group used their knowledge and experience to explore energy strategies, and reported on their findings. The experts and teachers provided comments on the performance of the students, and presented awards to students with excellent performance.
  During the summer school event, the delegation also visited the labs of Low Carbon Energy Conversion Technology Research Center of SARI, and discussed with the researchers on relevant research topics. Through the extensive study and exchange of views, keynote speeches, lab visit and group discussion, students from UK and China deepened the mutual understanding, enriched knowledge of clean energy and low carbon technologies, and gained insight for their future research projects.

Drexel-SARI Center Unveiling Ceremony Held

On June 6th, the unveiling ceremony of Drexel-SARI Center was held in Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. JIANG Mianheng, President of CAS Shanghai Branch and Prof. John A. Fry, President of Drexel University, unveiled the Drexel-SARI Center plate together. Robert Griffiths Consulate General of the United States of America Shanghai, China, Philadelphia Orchestra President Allison Vulgamore, Prof. ZHU Zhiyuan, Executive Vice President of CAS Shanghai Branch, Prof. FENG Songlin, President of SARI, Prof. JIANG Biao and Prof. SUN Yuhan, Vice Presidents of SARI, Prof. Mark Greenberg, Provost and Senior Vice President, Prof. Deb Crawford and Julie Mostov, Vice Provosts of Drexel, attended the event.


During his speech, Dr. JIANG thanked John A. Fry for what he had done to the successful establishment of the joint center and hoped that the center could inspire innovative young scientists to make more contributions and create a more prosperous world of bright future under the motto of "cooperation, innovation, dedication, contribution and inspiration."


President John A. Fry expressed his gratitude to President JIANG for the care and support to the construction of the joint center. He hoped the center could promote scientific communication and cooperation between SARI and Drexel University to better serve the society.
"SARI is committed to the original and integrated innovation of international scale while Drexel University owns rich educational and research resources. Through the platform, the two parties will carry out a series of collaboration on R&D and education. " Prof. FENG said in his speech. 


Robert Griffiths spoke highly of the cooperation between SARI and Drexel, and mentioned that US Consulate would provide all necessary support to encourage the cooperation between US and China. Allison Vulgamore stressed the importance of collaboration among research, education and arts, followed by a performance by musicians from Philadelphia Orchestra.
Drexel-SARI center is co-founded by SARI-CAS and Drexel University for the purposes of promoting visits of faculties and students, exploring joint research projects of commercial prospects, joint training of under-graduate and post-graduate students, Co-op, scientific training, seminars and other activities.
After the ceremony, the book release for the Chinese version of The Man Who Made Wall Street was held. The book, wrote by Dan Rottenberg, is about the life of the financial giant and founder of Drexel University Anthony J.Drexel.
