SARI Successfully Launched China-Italy Interdisciplinary Center

Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) launched an interdisciplinary cooperation initiative, signing the Charter of the China-Italy Interdisciplinary Center in Beijing during the 14th China-Italy Innovation Cooperation Week and hosting a Shanghai Theme Day event the China-Italy Interdisciplinary Forum.At the opening ceremony in Beijing on November 13th, SARI Vice President Wei Wei signed the charter with President Luigi Fiorentino of Italy’s National Biodiversity Future Center and Prof. Enrico Allaria from Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste to establish the China-Italy Interdisciplinary Center, witnessed by Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun and Italian Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini.The collaboration was further strenghtened at the Shanghai Theme Day from November 16th to 18th, where SARI convened the China-Italy Interdisciplinary Forum. The event was attended by SARI President Huang Zhengren, Vice Chair Huang Hong from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as well as the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai.During the opening of the Forum, the unveiling ceremony of the China-Italy Interdisciplinary Center was held, with the Center jointly unveiled by President Huang Zhengren, Vice President Wei Wei, Chief Legal Officer of NBFC Jean Paul de Jorio and Prof. Enrico Allaria of Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste with other representatives from Italian partner institutions.The forum fostered in-depth dialogues on three key areas: "Large-scale Research Facilities and Life Health Applications," "Energy and Environment Based on Large-scale Facilities," and "Biodiversity and Smart Cities.", bringing together around 60 participants from institutions including SARI, Ruijin Hospital, Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Genoa and Anton Dohrn Zoological Station.The China-Italy Interdisciplinary Center, established by SARI with Italian partners under CAS support, will focus on interdisciplinary fields such as large-scale science facilities, AI-driven research, low-carbon energy technologies, and biodiversity conservation.

The 2nd Asia-Oceania International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation Successfully Held in Hangzhou

The 2nd Asia-Oceania International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (AO-SRI2025), organized by the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences was successfully held in Hangzhou from October 28th to 31st, 2025.This event attracted 213 attendees from 11 countries. The scientific program was comprehensive, featuring 5 plenary lectures, 17 keynote lectures, 20 invited lectures, 25 oral lecturesand 23 poster presentations. Main topics included the upgrade and construction of synchrotron facilities, advances in X-ray optics and experimental methodology, big data processing and industrial applications, etc.Professor RenzhongTai, deputy president of SARI and deputy director of SSRF, chaired the conference and delivered the opening address. In his speech, he underscored the vigorous development of advanced synchrotron facilitiesacross Asia-Oceania region and called for further strengthening cross-regional collaboration.The conference provided a great plateau for leaders of the region's major synchrotron facilities. Representatives from Japan's SPring-8, Korea's 4GLS, and China's SSRF, HEPS, HALF etc., shared updates on facility construction, upgrades and strategic development.A series of renowned scientists highlighted groundbreaking applications of synchrotron radiation. Presentations from Professor Ho-kwang Mao, Professor Shin-ichi Adachi and Professor Fu Gao covered high-pressure science, molecular self-assembly, and structural biology. Other leading scholars presented cutting-edge research in areas such as thermoelectrics, brain imaging and industrial applications.In a significant step for regional governance, the Asia-Oceania Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR) council committee appointed Professor Renzhong Tai as new president and Professor Masaki Yamamoto from Japan as vice president. It was also announced that the next AO-SRI conference will be held in 2028 and hosted by Korea Basic Science Institute.The closing ceremony featured an address by Professor Richard Garrett, who presented the Hangzhou Communique. The communique expresses strong recognization for the progress of synchrotron radiation instrumentation across the Asia-Oceania region and strong confidence for the future of regional collaboration.The 2025 AO-SRI conference was financially supported by the Asia-Oceania Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Shanghai Advanced Research Institute Successfully Held the China-Italy Youth Workshop on Ecological Environmental Protection and Carbon Neutrality

To celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) , Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) organized the China-Italy Youth Workshop on Ecological Environmental Protection and Carbon Neutrality (the Workshop) from June 24 to July 5, 2025.The opening ceremony of the Workshop was held at SARI on June 24th. A total of 55 young leaders from universities and research institutions in China and Italyattended the ceremony.President of SARI Prof. Huang Zhengren, President of Italy's National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) Prof. Luigi Fiorentino, Director of the Division of European Affairs at the Bureau of International Cooperation of the CAS Mr. Ning Bolun, Director of the Division of European Affairs at the China Science and Technology Exchange Center Mr. Zhang Xiaowei, Researcher at the International Cooperation Department of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission Mr. Fu Zhigang, and other representatives attended the opening ceremony.Huang Zhengrenexpressed his expectation that this event would enhance mutual understanding between young leaders from both countries and deepen their awareness of green development, and promote China-Italyfriendship and cooperation as ambassadors in the near future.Luigi Fiorentinodelivered a video speech, hoping that Italian students would deepen their understanding of China through this trip and make positive contributions to China-Italy cooperation in green and sustainable development.Ning Bolun, Zhang Xiaowei and Fu Zhigangdelivered speeches respectively. SARI and UniGe Signed Cooperation Agreement

On March 26, Federico Delfino, Rector of the University of Genoa (hereinafter referred to as UniGe) led a delegation to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as SARI). The two parties signed a cooperation agreement to build a joint interdisciplinary research center. President and Party Secretary of SARI Prof. Huang Zhengren, Vice President Prof. Wei Wei attended the signing ceremony, which was presided over by Wei Wei.Huang Zhengren welcomed the delegation from the University of Genoa on behalf of SARI. He thought highly of the achievements made by UniGe in the fields of industrial and information engineering, materials science, clean energy, etc., and pointed out that the research fields and disciplinary advantages of both sides are highly compatible. He looks forward to building the interdisciplinary research center as a cradle for talent cultivation, a bridge for technology transformation, and a window for cultural communication.Federico Delphino expressed appreciation for the warm reception and noted that Shanghai and Genoa are both very important port cities. Prof. Alessandro Sepe Honored with the Chinese Government Friendship Award

Prof. Alessandro Sepe, Head of the Scientific Computing Program at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences was awarded the Chinese Government Friendship Award at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on September. 30th 2024.Prof. Sepe's main research direction is synchrotron Big Data science. So far, he has published nearly 40 papers in internationally renowned journals and had prominence and recognition within the international scientific community.He has led his team carrying out a series of innovative research and development works culminating in the architecting, design and deployment of the BDSC at the SSRF, while making a number of core technological breakthroughs in the design and development of scientific computing infrastructures, and in the research and development of automatic data processing pipelines.Furthermore, Prof. Sepe has actively used his overseas research network to promote SSRF's foreign exchanges and cooperation.Established in 1991, the Friendship Award is the highest honor to commend foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China's modernization drive. 100 winners are awarded the 2024 Chinese Government Friendship Award. Acting as experts in the field of international communication, they have made great contributions to making the voices of China better heard in the world.

Lecture for Sino-Italian Cooperation on Climate Change Successfully Held at SARI

On November 5th, Dr. Corrado Clini, President of the Italy-China Friendship Association and former Minister of the Italian Ministry of Environment, paid a visit to the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI). He was invited as a guest speaker to the "SARI Lecture " and delivered a keynote speech titled "Sino-Italian Cooperation on Climate Change." Prof. Huang Zhengren, President of SARI, as well as Dr. Vojko Bratina, Science and Technology Counsellor of the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai, joined the event together with researchers and students in energy and environment sector at SARI.President Huang, on behalf of SARI, welcomed Dr. Clini and expressed his thanks to Dr. Clini for the great contribution to environmental cooperation between China and Italian, and awarded him the Certificate of Distinguished Scientist of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.During Dr. Clini’ s lecture, he emphasized that climate change has always been a crucial issue of continuous attention and cooperation between China and Italy.
