SHANGHAI'S ambition to be a global innovation and science hub took a giant stride on September 26 with the unveiling of Zhangjiang Lab.
The lab, jointly established by the city government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was unveiled in Pudong’s Zhangjiang Science City. Shanghai Party Secretary Han Zheng, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences Bai Chunli, and the city’s Mayor Ying Yong attended the opening ceremony.
“The lab will serve as a comprehensive national science center to promote basic science, and aims to attract top researchers from across the world. Officials have set a target to become a world-class national laboratory by 2030.” Mayor Ying remarked.
“In a bid to develop the area into a “national science center” of global influence set forth by President Xi last year, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Municipal Government work closely and efficiently by introducing innovative policies and adopting practical measures to ensure the development of the lab.” said Bai Chunli in his address.
"In the beginning of the lab’s development, we will focus on building up major scientific facilities to make breakthroughs in fundamental sciences," said Wang Xi, Director of the lab, who is also the President of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS). "Particularly on photonics (the physical science of light), life science, information technology and brain-inspired intelligence technologies, an interdisciplinary between life science and information technology," Wang added.
Several national-level major science facilities in Zhangjiang including Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) and National Center for Protein Science (NCPSS) will be integrated into SARI to make the lab better serve the science community.

“Gaoke Cup” Student Innovation and Practice Project- International Summer Camp, which was co-organized by Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI) and ShanghaiTech University (ShanghaiTech) was successfully held from July 22nd to July 29th, 2017.
Four teams composed of 14 students who won the first and second prizes in the “Gaoke Cup” Innovation &Entrepreneurship Competition took part in the summer camp to visit six top-tier UK universities, namely the University of Oxford, Cambridge University, Imperial College London, University College London, University of Bristol and Cardiff University. Students exchanged ideas with British scientific and management teams through academic exchanges, and obtained the experience of open and rigorous British education system. On the other hand, the activity helped to broaden the students’ horizon and provide them the chance to introduce SARI and Shanghaitech as well as the construction plan of Shanghai Zhangjiang comprehensive national science center.
Funded by Zhangjiang Hi-Tech District Management Committee, the activity also got support from the Foreign &Commonwealth Office and British Consulate General Shanghai. It aims to integrate education and research in an innovative way and lay a solid foundation for future international collaboration in fields of common interest.

Demo Project for an Energy-Efficient Building Aims to Cut Energy by 40%

On July 20th 2017, Launch Ceremony of CAS-NEDO Energy Efficiency Demonstration Project was held in Shanghai.

On July 20th 2017, Launch Ceremony of CAS-NEDO Energy Efficiency Demonstration Project was held in Shanghai. By incorporating Japan's advanced energy-saving technology into the new Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Facility of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS), the project aims to realize energy saving of 40% in air conditioning and lighting use compared to conventional systems.
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Yasui Architects & Engineers, Inc., Pacific Consultants Co., Ltd., and Sanki Engineering Co., Ltd. have been collaborating with SARI on introducing a building energy management system (BEMS), which can comprehensively monitor and control energy-efficient equipment with energy-saving technologies to optimize energy consumption, at the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Facility (total floor area:16,000m2) since 2014. Construction of this building was recently completed in Pudong New Area, Shanghai by SARI. It is the first cooperative project between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and NEDO.
Comparison of energy consumption between the project system vs. a conventional system
  - Conventional system
*Assuming energy consumption in the same building using a conventional system
  3,450 MJ/m2//year
  (55.3 TJ/year ÷16,000m2)
  - Demonstration system
*Expected level of energy saving achieved by the equipment introduced in the project
  2,090 MJ/m2/year
  (33.4 TJ/year ÷16,000m2)
-40% compared to the conventional system
During the demonstration phase, building operational data will be collected until March 2018 to validate the efficiency of the energy-saving technology. It is designed to trigger the deployment of energy conservation technology in China's architecture field, increasing the number of such energy-efficient buildings in the country.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Munehiko Tsuchiya, Executive Director of NEDO; Mr. Daisuke Hirayama, Consul of the Japanese Consulate-General in Shanghai; Mr. Qiu Huasheng, former Deputy Director-General, Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS; Dr. Qu Ronghui, Vice President of CAS Shanghai Branch; Mr. Huang Weiguang and Mr. Wang Maohua, Vice Presidents of SARI. Company executives from Yasui Architects& Engineers, Inc., Pacific Consultants Co., Ltd., and Sanki Engineering Co., Ltd. and many other persons concerned with this project also attended the ceremony.

The 15th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization(ICCDU XV) was held from July 18th to July 21st 2017 at conference hall of ShanghaiTech University. Around 400 scientists from more than 20 countries attended the annual gathering of ICCDU.
The conference is chaired by Prof. Sun Yuhan, Director of CAS Key Laboratory of Low-carbon Conversion Science & Engineering of SARI. Prof. Jiang Mianheng, President of ShanghaiTech University delivered a welcome speech. In his speech, Prof Jiang pointed out that ICCDU has become an important platform for researchers and industry leaders to generate cooperation in the field of carbon dioxide utilization. China is facing a huge energy demand and in urgent need of new technologies for energy conservation and emission reduction. It is now China's national strategy to combat climate change. As the economic and innovation center of China, Shanghai is engaged in building a comprehensive national center of global influence and Zhangjiang science and technology innovation center. With joint effort, he hoped this conference would help to promote cooperation in dealing with challenges of sustainable energy development.
Academician He Mingyuan, CCUS Research Program Manager of Total Dr. David Nevicato, ICCDU Founder and Honorary ISC Chair Prof. Michele Aresta and ICCDU ISC Chair Prof. Song Chunshan were invited to give plenary talks.
The conference consisted of 14 keynote speeches, a hundred oral reports and more than seventy posters. In addition, Best Poster Award and Outstanding Young Researcher Award were presented during the conference.
Considering the fast development of technologies concerning carbon dioxide emission reduction and some of which has gone out of labs to demonstration or implementation stage, the conference arranged two workshops of cutting-edge CCUS related Frontier Research and CCUS related Industrial Technologies to let scholars and representatives from fields such as chemical, energy and environment, new materials, global change and economic policies to share their ideas.
The 15th ICCDU is jointly hosted by Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS) and ShanghaiTech University. It is the second time that ICCDU comes to China after 2009 in Tianjin.
