African Railway Economy Belt Seminar Held in Shanghai

April 24-25, the African Railway Economy Belt Seminar was successfully held in Shanghai, jointly hosted by Shanghai Advanced Research Institute(SARI) and the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center.


  April 24-25, the African Railway Economy Belt Seminar was successfully held in Shanghai, jointly hosted by Shanghai Advanced Research Institute(SARI) and the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center. President of SARI Professor Feng Songlin, Director of the Joint Center Professor Wang Qingfeng and other experts from Chinese Academy of Sciences and the industry joined the event.  
  In order to implement the cooperation spirit outlined in the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation regarding the China-Africa Railway Construction, Wildlife Conservation, Environment-friendly Agriculture and the Smart City Construction, the seminar explored related topics and discussed how to better promote the relevant cooperation areas. Professor Feng Songlin introduced the anti-poaching cooperation project with Kenya Wildlife Service, and presented the proposed plan for building a comprehensive anti-poaching system to be deployed in Tsavo National Park. Professor Zhang Bing, Deputy Director of the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, introduced how modern remote sensing technology help protect the African Ecology and Environment. Professor Hu Chunsheng, Deputy Director of the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, presented his work in Agriculture area, and mentioned that they already established an agriculture technology demonstration zone in Kenya.

  Professor Wang Qingfeng introduced the development history of the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center, the ongoing projects and future development plan. Professor Qiu Huasheng and Professor Mu Rongping talked about the strategies and the research-industry-education integrated cooperation.

  The attendees conducted in-depth discussion around topics of science and technology support, industry development and cooperation for win-win partnerships. Based on existing cooperation, the parties agreed to join forces to better promote cooperation, trying to provide more efficient development plans, contributing to China and Africa partnership and friendship.

2017 Shell Award for Excellence Ceremony Held in SARI

On April 18th 2017, the review meeting and awarding ceremony of 2017 Shell Award for Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation were held in Shanghai.


  On April 18th 2017, the review meeting and awarding ceremony of 2017 Shell Award for Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation were held in Shanghai. Six master and PhD students participating in the Frontier Science Programme from SARI, Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Institute of Process Engineering and ShanghaiTech University were awarded the First Prize.  
  The Award jury is composed of experts from Shell headed by Mr. Adam Hillier, VP Computational & Analytical Technology and Mr. Ajay Mehta, General Manager Long Range Research.   
  During the awarding ceremony, Prof. Sun Yuhan, Vice President of SARI reviewed the cooperation with Shell and thanked Shell for its long-term support and the award to inspire young students. Mr. Adam Hillier thought highly of the performance of each student and hoped more fruitful results would be achieved in the Phase II frontier science collaboration.  
  SARI and Shell have forged a strategic partnership regarding frontier Science Programme since 2012 and Shell Award for Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation is set up to stimulate and reward excellence in innovation and scientific exploration by Chinese students in the frontier sciences in 2015. The Excellence Award is supported by Shell annually. 
   After the ceremony, the parties had some in-depth technical discussion. Mr. Ajay Mehta gave a lecture on Shell’s long range research and had good discussion with researchers and students on the topics of future energy development and commercialization. Prof. Liu Zhi, Duputy Dean of School of Physical Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University gave an overview of ShanghaiTech University and the joint lab with SARI on low carbon energy. Prof. Sun Yuhan introduced SARI and its clean energy strategy. Experts from each party exchanged ideas on topics of common interest and the focus of future collaboration.  
  The delegates also paid a visit to CAS Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Conversion Science& Engineering, labs of ShanghaiTech University, Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility and Carbon Data and Carbon Evaluation Research Center after the meeting.

UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Delegation Visited SARI

A delegation led by John Loughhead, Chief Scientific Adviser, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, paid a visit to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, and was warmly welcomed by President Feng Songlin, Vice President Sun Yuhan and Assistant President Wei Wei.


  December 5, 2016 – A delegation led by John Loughhead, Chief Scientific Adviser, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, paid a visit to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, and was warmly welcomed by President Feng Songlin, Vice President Sun Yuhan and Assistant President Wei Wei. 
  President Feng introduced SARI’s overall development plan and ongoing research activities, followed by an overview of SARI cooperation with UK partners, and a few presentations from energy and IT sectors. John Loughhead thanked SARI for the hospitality, and pointed out that UK government would make more efforts to support international cooperation, science and technology R&D, and provide more funding for the technology industrialization, hoping both sides could find projects of mutual interest for strategic cooperation. Kevin Baughan, Chief Development Officer of Innovate UK mentioned that 20% to 30% of the funding from the program goes to research organizations partnering with industry. SARI’s cooperation with UK universities and industry has very solid foundation, and the parties could further discuss new cooperation projects. Vice President Sun highly agreed with the UK opinions in terms of cooperation and innovation, and said that SARI would explore the complementary advantages of both sides for better cooperation mechanism. 
  John Loughhead also visited to the Low Carbon Conversion Center, and discuss with researchers around topics of microalgae, CCUS and catalysts, etc.

2016 ESA-MOST China Dragon Cooperation Advanced Training Course in Atmospheric Remote Sensing Held at SARI

From October 24th to 29th, the 2016 European Space Agency (ESA)-MOST China Dragon Cooperation Advanced Training Course in Atmospheric Remote Sensing was held in Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS) and ShanghaiTech University.


  From October 24th to 29th, the 2016 European Space Agency (ESA)-MOST China Dragon Cooperation Advanced Training Course in Atmospheric Remote Sensing was held in Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS) and ShanghaiTech University. 14 famous experts from ESA and 5 Chinese famous experts gave lectures and computer practical training to more than 60 young scholars in the field of atmospheric remote sensing.  
  ESA representative Dr. Claus Zehner, Deputy Director-General of NRSCC Dr. Li Jiahong, and President of SARI Professor Feng Songlin gave speeches on the opening ceremony on October 24th. The Ceremony was presided by Wang Maohua, Executive Chair of Organizing Committee & the Vice President of SARI.

  During the six-day training programme, ESA and Chinese experts in atmospheric remote sensing introduced past, current and future atmospheric EO satellite missions and their data access and demonstrated the exploitation software and methods of ESA, as well as Chinese satellites’ data for air quality and Green-House-Gases monitoring from space. The participants had hands-on practice during the programme under the guidance of the lecturers and learned the remote sensing knowledge and relevant technologies. They also handed in and presented their posters in 8 categories to the experts.

  In the closing ceremony, the Division Chief of NRSCC Mrs. ZHANG Songmei, Dragon Cooperation Officer of China & Professor from the Research Institute of Forest Resource Information, Chinese Academy of Forestry Professor Gao Zhihai presented the awards to the best poster winners, and certificates to all of the participants.

  Dragon Cooperation is a large-scale international science and technology cooperation project in the field of earth observation between China and Europe, which has been implemented for 12 years. The Dragon Cooperation has set up a research team between China and Europe, which has a series of international high level scientific achievements. ESA and NRSCC provide a series of thematic advanced training courses on remote sensing applications. This year, the training programme was organized by SARI, ShanghaiTech University and Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (Microsat).

Sino-German Forum on Green Feedstock and Functionalized Materials was held at SARI from October 10th to 12th 2016.


  Sino-German Forum on Green Feedstock and Functionalized Materials was held at SARI from October 10th to 12th 2016. This workshop was hosted by Sun Yuhan, Vice President of SARI. Mr. Fu Xiangsheng, Vice Chairman of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn, Director of Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS made opening speeches. Fu Xiangsheng emphasized: International S&T cooperation is playing a more and more important role. Green feedstock and functionalized materials is a key area of China’s future development, so it has great potential in China. Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn hoped this workshop would help scientists and representatives from the industry understand each other better and find cooperation possibilities.
  This workshop focused on green feedstock and functionalized materials. Prof. He Ming, Director of Shanghai Key Laboratory for Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes and Prof. Ding Kuiling, Director of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS made keynote speeches on Chemistry and Energy Sustainability and Atom-economy Transformation of CO2 respectively. Scientists from Fraunhofer IWMS, SARI, ShanghaiTech University and Lu’an Group introduced their work on electrocatalysts, biorefinery processes, chemical utilizations of CO2 and lignite feedstock and had heated discussion with attendees on topics of mutual interest.
  The workshop is initiated by Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) and China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF). Over fifty representatives from industry partners BASF, Clariant, Covestro, China National Petroleum Corporation, Huayi Group, Wison, YangMei Chemical, Shandong Yuhuang Chemical Group, Shandong Jining Development Zone, etc. attended the workshop.

SARI and Shell Continue Strategic Cooperation in Energy and Environment Frontier Technology

Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) and Shell Global Solutions International B.V. (Shell) signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement on April 6, 2016 in Shanghai to continue the frontier science collaboration. The two parties will continue the work on providing solutions for future energy security by combining research, education and industry.

The two parties will continue the work on providing solutions for future energy security by combining research, education and industry.

  Under the agreement, Shell will continue to provide funding to support SARI and certain institutes and universities of CAS in energy and environment frontier technology focus areas such as Hybrid Energy Systems, Carbon Capture and Utilization or Storage, and New Materials.   
  The partnership started in April 2012. Under the Phase I Agreement, around 30 projects from 6 CAS institutes and universities in Shanghai, Beijing, Shanxi and Wuhan were funded, among which the project CO2 dry reforming and 1st generation of mixed alcohol synthesis from syngas have gone into demo stage successfully and won silver award in the 17th China International Industry Fair in 2015. 
  "The flexible platform Shell and SARI established, which puts both public property and market into consideration, will help to realize the sharing of science and technology resources and promote innovation synergy,” remarked Mr. Fu Guoqing, chief technology officer of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. “Shell-SARI cooperation mode is well practicing the interactive and joint action mechanism of industry-university-research institution, and is surely echoing the construction of Zhangjiang Science and Technology City in Pudong,” remarked confidently by Mr. Zhu Zhiyuan, President of CAS Shanghai Branch.
