Sino-German Forum on Green Feedstock and Functionalized Materials was held at SARI from October 10th to 12th 2016.


  Sino-German Forum on Green Feedstock and Functionalized Materials was held at SARI from October 10th to 12th 2016. This workshop was hosted by Sun Yuhan, Vice President of SARI. Mr. Fu Xiangsheng, Vice Chairman of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn, Director of Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS made opening speeches. Fu Xiangsheng emphasized: International S&T cooperation is playing a more and more important role. Green feedstock and functionalized materials is a key area of China’s future development, so it has great potential in China. Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn hoped this workshop would help scientists and representatives from the industry understand each other better and find cooperation possibilities.
  This workshop focused on green feedstock and functionalized materials. Prof. He Ming, Director of Shanghai Key Laboratory for Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes and Prof. Ding Kuiling, Director of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS made keynote speeches on Chemistry and Energy Sustainability and Atom-economy Transformation of CO2 respectively. Scientists from Fraunhofer IWMS, SARI, ShanghaiTech University and Lu’an Group introduced their work on electrocatalysts, biorefinery processes, chemical utilizations of CO2 and lignite feedstock and had heated discussion with attendees on topics of mutual interest.
  The workshop is initiated by Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) and China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF). Over fifty representatives from industry partners BASF, Clariant, Covestro, China National Petroleum Corporation, Huayi Group, Wison, YangMei Chemical, Shandong Yuhuang Chemical Group, Shandong Jining Development Zone, etc. attended the workshop.

SARI and Shell Continue Strategic Cooperation in Energy and Environment Frontier Technology

Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) and Shell Global Solutions International B.V. (Shell) signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement on April 6, 2016 in Shanghai to continue the frontier science collaboration. The two parties will continue the work on providing solutions for future energy security by combining research, education and industry.

  Under the agreement, Shell will continue to provide funding to support SARI and certain institutes and universities of CAS in energy and environment frontier technology focus areas such as Hybrid Energy Systems, Carbon Capture and Utilization or Storage, and New Materials.   
  The partnership started in April 2012. Under the Phase I Agreement, around 30 projects from 6 CAS institutes and universities in Shanghai, Beijing, Shanxi and Wuhan were funded, among which the project CO2 dry reforming and 1st generation of mixed alcohol synthesis from syngas have gone into demo stage successfully and won silver award in the 17th China International Industry Fair in 2015. 
  "The flexible platform Shell and SARI established, which puts both public property and market into consideration, will help to realize the sharing of science and technology resources and promote innovation synergy,” remarked Mr. Fu Guoqing, chief technology officer of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. “Shell-SARI cooperation mode is well practicing the interactive and joint action mechanism of industry-university-research institution, and is surely echoing the construction of Zhangjiang Science and Technology City in Pudong,” remarked confidently by Mr. Zhu Zhiyuan, President of CAS Shanghai Branch.

Prince Constantijn van Oranje-Nassau of the Netherlands Visited SARI

Prince Constantijn van Oranje-Nassau of the Netherlands led a delegation to visit SARI on January 15th 2016. Vice Presidents Sun Yuhan and Jiang Biao received and held a meeting with the delegation.

  Prof. Sun warmly welcomed the delegation and showed Prince Constantijn around SARI’s Exhibition Hall and CAS Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Conversion and Engineering. He also gave an overview of SARI’s collaboration with Dutch partners such as Shell, ECN and Utrecht University. Prof. Jiang, who’s in charge of technology transfer in SARI, introduced SARI’s mechanism in technology transfer and start-ups initiatives. Prince Constantijn thought highly of SARI’s Sino-Dutch ties, and gave a brief introduction of StartUpDelta’s International Circle of Influencers. He believed science and technology should provide greater support to startups, and hoped SARI and its Dutch partners will promote industrialization of joint research findings through start-ups in the near future.  
  Prince Constantijn also visited SARI’s Incubation Center and Energy Storage and Conversion Lab, discussed with the researchers and entrepreneurs on the topic of research and industry cooperation.

Shell Award for Excellence Ceremony Held in SARI

On January 12th 2016, the review meeting and award ceremony of Shell Award for Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation were held in SARI.


  On January 12th 2016, the review meeting and award ceremony of Shell Award for Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation were held in SARI. Five PhD students participating in the Frontier Science Programme from SARI, ShanghaiTech University and Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics got the first Award, with the other five students from Institute of Coal Chemistry and SARI received excellent award.
  The Award jury is composed of experts from Shell headed by Mr. Gerald Schotman, Managing Director NAM and Dr. Alexander VAN DER MADE, senior principal scientist of future energy technologies and winner of 2016 CAS President’s International Fellowship (PIFI) for Visiting Scientists.
  The Award Ceremony was hosted by Vice President Sun Yuhan of SARI, witnessed by leadership from Shell and SARI, as well as representatives from Dutch Consul General in Shanghai.
   “I wanted to thank Shell for setting up the award to inspire young students, which will help them a lot for their future career. And congratulations to all the students for your excellent research!” said President Feng Songlin of SARI on the Award Ceremony. Mr. Gerald Schotman presented the award and encouraged the students to keep their hard work on frontier research in respective areas.
  SARI and Shell have forged a strategic partnership regarding frontier Science Programme since 2012 and Shell Award for Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation is set up to stimulate and reward excellence in innovation and scientific exploration by Chinese PhD students in the frontier sciences in 2015. The Excellence Award will be supported by Shell annually.
  After the ceremony, Mr. Schotman gave an academic lecture, sharing his experience and perspectives on future energy with young scientists and students of SARI and ShanghaiTech.

SARI Got Silver Award in CIIF

The project “CO2-CH4 reforming to CO and H2” was awarded the Silver Award by the 17th session China International Industry Fair. It uses CO2 as carbon resource and reduces its emission, providing technology support for China’s low carbon energy strategy.


  The 17th China International Industry Fair (CIIF) 2015 was held from November3-7, 2015 at Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). SARI’s nine projects including CO2-CH4 reforming to CO and H2, smart government, UHF RFID tag chip and read/write device module, etc. were on display under the theme of smart, green and low-carbon. 
  The project “CO2-CH4 reforming to CO and H2” was awarded the Silver Award by the 17th session China International Industry Fair. It uses CO2 as carbon resource and reduces its emission, providing technology support for China’s low carbon energy strategy.
  SARI’s projects attracted a lot of visitors during the exhibition period, including President Jiang Mianheng of ShanghaiTech University, Director Yan Qing of Bureau of Science& Technology for development CAS, President Zhu Zhiyuan and Vice President Zhang Xu of CAS Shanghai Branch.

Shell Leadership Visited SARI

A delegation led by Projects & Director of Shell Mr. Harry Brekelmans paid a visit to SARI on October 14th, 2015. SARI’s President Feng Songlin, Vice President Sun Yuhan, and relevant researchers received the delegation.


  A delegation led by Projects & Director of Shell Mr. Harry Brekelmans paid a visit to SARI on October 14th, 2015. SARI’s President Feng Songlin, Vice President Sun Yuhan, and relevant researchers received the delegation. 
  The meeting was hosted by Mr. Wang Maohua. President Feng firstly delivered a welcome speech, in which he thought highly of the strategic partnership between Shell and SARI in the past five years and expected more fruitful achievements to come in the future. Mr. Harry Brekelmans said he was impressed by China’s rapid development in energy related area as well as Shell’s collaboration with SARI-CAS. He also hoped researchers from both sides would work more closely to provide solutions for future energy system.
  Prof. Sun Yuhan made a presentation, introducing SARI and its Low Carbon Energy Strategy, as well as key projects in Shell Frontier Sciences Program, followed by the SARI-Shell Collaboration overview made by Prof. Alexander van der Made, Senior Principal Researcher of Shell China Project & Technology. Shell Frontier Sciences Program has launched three rounds altogether 20 frontier projects in the last four years. Currently, the steering committee is reviewing the fourth round of proposals. Projects of the first round like CO2 dry reforming to syngas by nanocatalysis and Syngas into mixed alcohols by nanocatalysis are in demo operation now.
