A delegation led by Projects & Director of Shell Mr. Harry Brekelmans paid a visit to SARI on October 14th, 2015. SARI’s President Feng Songlin, Vice President Sun Yuhan, and relevant researchers received the delegation. The meeting was hosted by Mr. Wang Maohua. President Feng firstly delivered a welcome speech, in which he thought highly of the strategic partnership between Shell and SARI in the past five years and expected more fruitful achievements to come in the future. Mr. Harry Brekelmans said he was impressed by China’s rapid development in energy related area as well as Shell’s collaboration with SARI-CAS. He also hoped researchers from both sides would work more closely to provide solutions for future energy system. Prof. Sun Yuhan made a presentation, introducing SARI and its Low Carbon Energy Strategy, as well as key projects in Shell Frontier Sciences Program, followed by the SARI-Shell Collaboration overview made by Prof. Alexander van der Made, Senior Principal Researcher of Shell China Project & Technology. Shell Frontier Sciences Program has launched three rounds altogether 20 frontier projects in the last four years. Currently, the steering committee is reviewing the fourth round of proposals. Projects of the first round like CO2 dry reforming to syngas by nanocatalysis and Syngas into mixed alcohols by nanocatalysis are in demo operation now. The delegation visited CAS Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Conversion and Engineering after the meeting.
Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials Halle (Fraunhofer IWM) and Shanghai Huayi (Group) Company (Huayi) on September. 24th , 2015, regarding joint conferences on the subject of Alternative rawmaterials for the chemical and plastics-processing industry. Vice President of SARI Prof. Sun Yuhan, Director of the Fraunhofer IWM in Halle Prof.Ralf Wehrspohn and Vice-President of Huayi Prof. Jianhua Wei signed the MoU, and the signing was performed at the presence of Marco Tullner, State Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Economic Affairs. Vice President of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission Mr. Ma Xingfa, Associate President of SARI Prof. Wei Wei, President of Huayi Mr. Liu Xunfeng attended the event. "Although oil and gas are key raw materials for the chemical industry, they are finite resources. At the Fraunhofer IWM we demonstrate, by using a wide range of ideas and projects, what sustainable solutions for the future may look like. This can offer a crucial competitive advantage, especially to companies in Central Germany, putting them at the cutting edge of the green economy," said Professor Ralf Wehrspohn, Director of the Fraunhofer IWM in Halle. "We found the previous collaboration with our partners from the previous mechanism like exchange of students, visits to companies or joint projects. The Memorandum of Understanding will enable us to focus our mutual strengths even more sharply,"said Professor Yuhan Sun, Vice-President of SARI. "A reliable supply of raw materials is vital for our sector. The search for alternatives to fossil resources is therefore of great importance to us both in economic and environmental terms," said Professor Jianhua Wei, Vice-President of Huayi, in emphasising the importance of the agreement. The representatives attended the 6th Science and Technology work conference of Huayi after the signing ceremony and exchanged ideas on topics of common concern. Under the agreement three parties will host two joint conferences on the subject of "Alternative rawmaterials for the chemical and plastics-processing industry" in Shanghai and Germany, trying to build international platform for collaboration and innovation to make contribution to the construction of Shanghai Sci-Tech Innovation Center.
Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS) signed a Framework Agreement with the University of Nottingham (UoN) to establish a joint research center on September. 23rd , 2015. Vice President of SARI Prof. Sun Yuhan and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UoN Prof. Karen Kox signed the Agreement, witnessed by Associate President of SARI Prof. Wei Wei , Vice-Chancellor of UoN Professor Sir David Greenaway and Rt. Hon. Anna Soubry MP, Minister of State for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise. SARI and UoN signed a MoU last September regarding the cooperation on the development of solid adsorbents for CO2 capture. The two parties will conduct in-depth cooperation in the following three key areas: Materials and technologies for CO2 capture by adsorption, Thermochemical utilization of waste biomass, Hydrothermal utilization of biomass and lignite.
On July 20th 2015, American academician Menachem Elimelech, Professor at Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of Yale University was invited to visit SARI and deliver a keynote speech titled “High Performance Membranes for Energy-Efficient Desalination and Wastewater Reuse”. Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee Mr. Wang Maohua delivered a welcome speech and Prof He Tao from Membrane Materials and Separation Technology laboratory of SARI hosted the event. Researchers and students from companies and colleges like DOW, GE, Slovay, Modern Water, Disney, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Tongji University attend the academic report. In this presentation, Professor Elimelech mainly introduced how to apply new type of nanometer materials in membrane preparation process used in desalination and wastewater reuse processes as well as the development of the membrane materials with anti-fouling and anti-microbial properties. The attendees held a heated discussion with professor Elimelech about the membrane modification, the application in Forward Osmosis and Membrane Distillation processes.
