China International Industry Fair (CIIF) 2011 opened in Shanghai on 1st November, 2011. Together with 110 other major innovation projects from CAS, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) participated in this event with its innovative results on the IGCC Project with Shanxi Lu'an Group, SARI’s Demonstration Project in Inner Circulation Pyrolysis and Charring Technology under Hypothermia-Hypoxic Conditions.

China International Industry Fair (CIIF) 2011 opened in Shanghai on 1st November, 2011. Together with 110 other major innovation projects from CAS, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) participated in this event with its innovative results on the IGCC Project with Shanxi Lu’an Group, SARI’s Demonstration Project in Inner Circulation Pyrolysis and Charring Technology under Hypothermia-Hypoxic Conditions. SARI’s presence and its innovation achievements caught the attention of and won the praise from the leaders concerned and the experts in those areas as well.
Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng announced the opening of CIIF 2011. Mr. Yang Xiong, Shanghai’s Senior Vice Mayor, hosted the opening ceremony. Leaders of various departments, such as Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Ministry Su Po, Vice Minister of Education Ministry Du Zhanyuan, CAS Secretary-General Deng Maicun, Vice Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Wang Jinzhen, Deputy Director of High-tech Center of Science and Technology Ministry Yuan Jianxiang, General Office Deputy Director of Chinese Academy of Engineering Yi Jian, Deputy Secretary-Genearal of China Machinery Industry Federation Xiang Hui and so on, attended the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, Shanghai Municipal Government leaders Xu Lin, Ai Baojun, Jiang Liang, along with other provincial or municipal leaders of Anhui, Hebei, Henan, Chongqing, Sichuan, Tibet, Xinjiang, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, etc. were also present on the ceremony.
Before the opening ceremony, Mayor Han Zheng and Minister of Industry and Information Technology Ministry Miao Wei inspected CAS’s display area accompanied by Mr. Zhu Zhiyuan, Executive Vice President of CAS Shanghai Branch. Other leaders such as Director-General of CAS Academy-Locality Cooperation Bureau Qi Qiang also toured around CAS’S exhibition area that day.
The IGCC Project, aiming to establish China’s first demonstration park of low-carbon million-ton-scale combined production of gas, oil, fertilizer and power based on coal, is an integrated innovation case initiated by SARI and Shanxi Lu’an Group, and one of the major projects for Shanxi’s development transition during “the Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period. The IGCC Park demonstrates the theme of “combined use of one waste and three gases with coking and oil producing technologies” for development. It embodies the low-carbon energy cycling and innovative technology integration idea featured by resource integration, raw material diversification and high-end products. It also provides China’s economic development with a solution of clean energy chemical industry based on coal. The IGCC Park includes eight modules, i.e. raw material, coking technology, power technology, public usage, gasification technology, combination technology, product output and CO2 utilization. The eight modules are closely related to and combined with one another, thus forming the whole low-carbon energy cycling system.
The Demonstration Project of Inner Circulation Pyrolysis and Charring Technology under Hypothermia-Hypoxic Conditions employs SARI’s related technologies to optimize the production procedures, saving the waste pre-classification procedure, realizing continuous material in and out, stabilized equipment operation, balanced thermal energy and its effective utilization, the use of small modular processing equipments, and meeting the emission standard. The technology enables macromolecular fracture of the organic components of the wastes under hypothermia hypoxic or oxygen-free conditions, generating flammable gas, organic tar and black charcoal. The black charcoal produced in this way is free from the secondary pollution by heavy metals. This technology has seen initial success in resource utilization of the wastes treated by it and experiments and research on bio-oil, bio-gas and bio-charcoal production have been conducted, which show a promising prospect. After thirteen-year continuous development, CIIF has become the largest scaled and most comprehensive exhibition event of the highest level in China’s Industrial Economy Domain. 2011 is the starting year of China’s Twelfth Five-Year Plan. The CIIF 2011 went with the theme of “Strategic Emerging Industries with Innovation and Transformation”, which fully reflects the exhibition purpose to serve the national strategies.

Low Carbon Energy Conversion Technology Center Made Significant Progress

After one year's development, Low Carbon Energy Conversion Technology Center (LCECTC), which was jointly established by SARI and Lu' an Mining Industry Group Co., Ltd, successfully completed its experiment platform of the first phrase.

After one year's development, Low Carbon Energy Conversion Technology Center (LCECTC), which was jointly established by SARI and Lu' an Mining Industry Group Co., Ltd, successfully completed its experiment platform of the first phrase. Based on the three technology platforms, LCECTC has taken on five national and provincial projects and filed six invention patents. The research team of LCECTC includes two scientists of the CAS Hundred Talents, two of Shanghai Thousand Talents Program, which well reflect the advantage of achieving construction and development by the integration of government, industry, college and institute.
Low Carbon Energy Conversion Technology Center is an integrated innovative scientific research platform jointly established by SARI and enterprises, aiming to conduct frontier researches and commercialization collaboration to make contribution to the development of our country's clean energy technology. Supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Municipal Government, LCECTC completed its lab construction shortly after the opening ceremony on March 15th, 2010. On July 27th, 2011, the "Collaboration agreement of phase II low carbon energy technology development" was signed by Prof. FENG Songlin, President of SARI and Mr. LI Jinping, President of Lu' an Group.
   Opening Ceremony
Currently, LCECTC has already completed its platform of catalyst preparation, high flux reactor, dynamic analysis and testing and has successfully applied five national and provincial projects including CO2 Reforming of CH4 to Syngas. In the meantime, LCECTC has conducted extensive collaboration with world-renowned companies including BP, Shell, TOTAL and PNNL.

According to our country's energy structure and the sustainable development strategy, the development trend of energy technology will move from high carbon to low carbon or even zero carbon to realize the full use and minimum emission of carbon resources, reaching a win-win situation with efficient utilization in an environment–friendly way. Therefore, efficient utilization of carbon resources with relatively less negative effect on the environment is the key of the development. LCECTC integrates the geographic advantage of Shanghai and Shanxi and exerts certain influence to the low carbon conversion and utilization of coal-based carbon resources. With well-established platforms and the development momentum, according to the strategic requirements of the country and industry and the technology development trend, LCECTC will further solve the major common technological issues through technology integration, utilizing talent and information advantage to support the development of clean energy industry.
