Seminar on Sino-British Nano Structure and Advanced Materials Held

On August 16th, 2010, Seminar on Sino-British Nano Structure and Advanced Materials, which was jointly organized by FCO/BIS Scientific Innovation web of Britain and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was held in JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai.


  On August 16th, 2010, Seminar on Sino-British Nano Structure and Advanced Materials, which was jointly organized by FCO/BIS Scientific Innovation web of Britain and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was held in JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai. Around 30 people attended the conference, including Prof. Paul Hogg from University of Manchester, Prof. GUO Zhengxiao, Vice President of University College London (UCL), Prof. LU Ke from Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Prof. CHE Shun’ai from Shanghai Jiaotong University.
  Hosted by Prof GUO Zhengxiao, the seminar served as a platform to exchange ideas on the latest research achievements in terms of advanced materials and Nano structure. It will help to explore innovative production skills of Nano Structure materials featuring low cost, high efficiency, high liability, controllable and environment-friendly. In the meantime, it also helped to identify the problems and challenges in the practical application and to establish the sustainable cooperation between China and Britain. Related researchers from SARI attended the conference and took an active part in the discussion.

Cancer Stem Cell and Cancer Treatment Seminar Held

Organized by Shanghai Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and co-organized by Shanghai Life Sciences Institute of CAS and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of CAS, the seminar named "Cancer Stem Cell and Cancer Treatment" was held in Shanghai Center for Interdisciplinary Studies from July 6th to 7th, 2010.

Organized by Shanghai Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and co-organized by Shanghai Life Sciences Institute of CAS and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of CAS, the seminar named "Cancer Stem Cell and Cancer Treatment" was held in Shanghai Center for Interdisciplinary Studies from July 6th to 7th, 2010. Vice President of CAS JIANG Mianheng, Director General of Biological Bureau ZHANG Zhibin, Vice President of CAS Shanghai Branch ZHU Zhiyuan, Director and Vice Director of Shanghai Biological Sciences Institute CHEN Xiaoya and LI Lin, Director of SARI FENG Songlin and Vice Directors JIANG Biao, SUN Yuhan and HUANG Weiguang et al. attended the conference.
  Over 40 experts and professionals from both home and broad attended the seminar, including those from Washington University, The University of Michigan, Systems Biology Research Institute of America, Anderson Cancer Research Center of America, Shanghai Health Institute, Biochemical and Cell Institute, etc.
  Prof LI Lingheng from America's Medical Research Center, Stowe introduced the goals and contents to be discussed in this conference. Prof. CHEN Xiaoya, Prof. FENG Songlin, expressed their positive attitude towards cooperation on behalf of Shanghai Biological Sciences Institute and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute respectively. They both hoped that experts present can put forward their ideas on the measures or medicine that can transfer cutting-edge research results into real practice and make it play a vital role in the national economy in a rapid pace. Their valuable suggestion would contribute to the establishment of stem cells and tumor center bearing Chinese characteristics, the treatment of cancer and development of biological medicine.
  Prof. ZHANG Zhibin introduced the recent visit to Systems Biology Research Institute of America by CAS President LU Yongxiang, and made it clear that Biological Bureau will enhance innovation in infrastructure and biology industry under the instructions from President LU and actively engage in cooperation with overseas Chinese scientists. It is expected that Shanghai Advanced Research Institute and Shanghai Biological Sciences Institute would launch the formation of the research center of Stem Cell and Regenerative medicine in the near future, and establish a dedicated major project.
  During the seminar, experts exchanged their ideas on the latest technology and hot topics of stem cell and made a comparison between domestic and foreign development. They also carefully evaluated the opportunity and advantage of China and conducted in-depth discussion about the construction of Stem Cell and Regenerative medicine research center in CAS.

The application of Evaporative Cooling technology on Electrical Equipment

Evaporative cooling technology can be applied in electrical equipment. Our research institute started the research of 1.2 MW fully evaporative cooling generator at first. Through the development of 50 MW evaporative cooling generator which can be working over ten years with trouble-free maintenance, our target is to develop and apply this technology on those generators having larger capacity.

Meanwhile, we are planning to research the development of special transformers of evaporative cooling technology.
  The performance of the product:
  Through a long period of research, our research institute has developed the evaporative cooling technology which takes insulation dielectric as medium. Such technology has been successfully applied to multiple hydraulic-powered generators with different-capacity, and it has demonstrated superior technical and economic performance.
  First of all, the product does not have non-pump closed loop so that there is no need for external control facilities.
  Secondly, it is capable of self-adaptive and self-medication for different operation conditions of motors.
  Thirdly, the winding temperature of motor is low and uniform, which can extend the operational life of insulation as well as generate super-capacity.
  Fourthly, the constitution of such system is simple and there is no blocking and leakage accidents caused by defects.
  Last but not least, the operation and maintenance of the product is easy and convenient.
  Accordingly, our product has wide application scale on high speed and multi-capacity level generators, especially on those generators with large capacity.

SARI Promotes Technology Transfer and Transformation

On January 19, a group led by Prof. Jiang Biao, Vice President of CAS Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) visited the Humen Port Management Committee. The two parities had a discussion on the coming project named "The project of DongGuan Humen Port Intelligent Container Management System".

The two parities had a discussion on the coming project named “The project of DongGuan Humen Port Intelligent Container Management System”. Liu Ning, the Deputy Secretary-general of municipal government of DongGuan and Director of Humen Port Management Committee, and Sun DianYi, the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Academy-locality Cooperation CAS, attended the meeting.
  SARI will take the responsibility of designing and construction of the program of “The project of DongGuan Humen Port Intelligent Container Management System” while the project is funded by the East March Logistics Ltd. The total funding is 500 millionRMB, where the investment on intelligent management system will take more than 100 million RMB. The project is a direct application of the technology of IOT that integrates many advanced technologies such as RFID, wireless sensor, OCR, GIS, GPS. It will meet the information demand of enterprise and relevant departments through data sharing on the basis of a unified digital-based Logistics Information Platform to reduce human vulnerability and operational errors as well as prevent mismatch of cargo tanks. By applying real-time tracking on containers, it can not only meet the demand of current customers, but also improve the supervision of functional departments and assort the continuous development of port operation in the future.
  Liu Ning listened to the designing and construction of the project and highly appreciated this program. He thought that such program was progressive and perfect. He believed that such project would form the largest domestic integrated platform of container yard and once the program was successfully implemented in Dongguan, it will be a bright spot of all the ports in the country. He also expressed that he was looking forward to enhance the communication with the CAS to form a closer strategic partnership.
  Sun DianYi highly appreciated SARI’s report of the project. He asked SARI to work hard on the implementation of the designing and technology service of the project. He also wished that more and more technology would be settled at DongGuan to enhance the development of local economic.

Companion Microsatellite for Shenzhou VII Flight Mission of SARI is awarded Innovation Prize

2009 International Industry Exposition of China successfully concluded in Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) on November 11. All the awards of this year were unveiled on the closing day when 39 items on exhibition were awarded, with 4 gold prizes, 9 silver prizes, 14 bronze prizes and 12 innovation prizes.

All the awards of this year were unveiled on the closing day when 39 items on exhibition were awarded, with 4 gold prizes, 9 silver prizes, 14 bronze prizes and 12 innovation prizes. The innovation prizes, which had caught public attention, were awarded to products of originality and creativity which were first exhibited on Industry Exposition of China. The "Companion Microsatellite for Shenzhou VII Flight Mission" invented by Shanghai Microsatellite Engineering Center, which is under Shanghai Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was not only highly thought of by most visitors but also shortlisted and finally awarded the Innovation Prize.

Micro-structure Optics and Application

Dense Wave Division Multiplex (DWDM) technique is one of the key technologies in fiber-optic communication. China is planning to adopt DWDM technique to improve transmission rate and increase the number of information channels in terrestrial communications backbone.

  Dense Wave Division Multiplex (DWDM) technique is one of the key technologies in fiber-optic communication. China is planning to adopt DWDM technique to improve transmission rate and increase the number of information channels in terrestrial communications backbone.
  The present solutions for DWDM technique are dielectric film technique, arrayed waveguide technique, fiber gratings technique and so on. Dielectric films technique is difficult to reach WDM more than 60 channels, which is not suitable for the future WDM over 1000 channels program. Array waveguide has a strict requirement for temperature stability, and it still doesn’t meet the requirement even if the temperature control throughout the apparatus is uniform. Fiber Bragg Grating is the most promising so far a way. However, it needs separation of the reflected wave from optical loop or Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and the loop device manufacturing is difficult and expensive, and several other channels removing division need series fiber grating. Photorefractive Lithium Niobate(LN) crystal is an attractive holographic recording material, its advantages is the significant changes of refractive index , while LN crystals is always associated with the intensity of polarization state.
  Hereby, we propose a solution of micro-structure fiber gating, which can simultaneously realize the multi-channel beam dividing and bunching, and it doesn’t lead to a loss by the increasing number of channels. It is a competitive solution for future DWDM technique developing.
